Martensitic transformations in Ni-49.5Ti (at.%) polycrystals transforming upon mechanical loading in tension and compression were investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction experiments. Transformation processes, in particular, the stresses and phase fractions evolving in specifically oriented grains of the transforming polycrystal were evaluated and the results were interpreted using a dedicated micromechanisc model. The experimentally observed tension/compression asymmetry of mechanical properties, stress induced martensite textures and load and phase fraction partitioning in the transforming NiTi polycrystal were linked by the model to the crystallography of B2-B19` transformation.
