AnnotationChronic hypoxia and preconditioning increase cardiac tolerance to ischemic injury but the two phenomena are not additive. Newborn hearts are more resistant than adults and cannot be preconditioned. Mechanism of protection by chronic hypoxia involves mitochondrial K(ATP) channels.
