Tato studie, uvozující pátý svazek Sebraných spisů Karla Kosíka, se zabývá jeho intelektuálním vývojem v období kolem československého jara 1968. Načrtává přitom pestrý obraz tohoto marxistického myslitele. Kosík je v prvé řadě představen jako filosof a politický myslitel uvažující o hlubších základech politiky. Je rovněž prezentován jako sociální kritik analyzující patologie socialistické společnosti a konfrontující realitu socialismu se socialistickými ideály. Kromě toho je však také vyobrazen jako civilizační kritik diagnostikující krizi moderní doby, jako angažovaný intelektuál vyjadřující se k politickému dění a v neposlední řadě jako aktivní politik a posrpnový člen ÚV KSČ. Studie dokládá, že ve všech navzájem provázaných rolích Kosík řešil podobné problémy. Kladl si otázku ideových a hodnotových souřadnic určujících identitu národních společenství, lidské přirozenosti a podstaty, smyslu politiky a socialismu atd.

This study, which introduces the fifth volume of Collected Writings of Karel Kosík, deals with his intellectual development in the period around the Czechoslovak Spring of 1968. In doing so, it sketches a colourful picture of this Marxist thinker. First, Kosík is presented as a philosopher and political thinker who is reflecting on the deeper foundations of politics. He is also presented as a social critic analysing the pathologies of socialist society and confronting the reality of socialism with socialist ideals. In addition to that, he is also portrayed as a critic of civilization who is diagnosing the crisis of modern era, further as an engaged intellectual commenting on political events, and last but not least as an active politician and post-war member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The study demonstrates that in all of these interrelated roles Kosík addressed similar problems. He questioned the ideological and value coordinates determining the identity of national communities, human nature and essence, the meaning of politics and socialism, etc.
