AnnotationScenedesmus sp. CCALA 1074 was proposed as an alternative microalgal model for studying the regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis and accumulation. This strain can produce high levels of carotenoids, mainly lutein, over all growth phases. The relevances of nitrate defficiency and high light intensity were evaluated; light seems to be a critical factor for carotenoid accumulation, while nitrogen plays only a minor role.
