AnnotationTime consuming measurements can be facilitated by automation: this helps to perform a large number of measurements with different settings of several parameters and changing them according to any special need. Solutions integrated in commercial microscopes usually allow building custom protocols (like Time Controller of Olympus or Experiment Designer of Zeiss) but sometimes they are unable to provide flexible enough special setups; moreover, their ability to establish connection with external devices is quite limited. The presented Cell Finder program was developed for Olympus FV1000 and FV1200 confocal microscopes. It provides 1) a text file based macro language to control the imaging functions of the microscope 2) a possibility to control several external hardware devices – light sources, thermal controllers or actuators – during the measurement by a cheap and easy to use Arduino microcontroller. 3) As an extra feature Cell Finder includes an ergonomic user environment, which helps to select the target cells and relocate the moving sample in a way that minimizes the unwanted bleaching of the cells with the scanning laser.
