We found that phenformin dose-dependently inhibits activities of complex I, II and IV in isolated mitochondria, paralleled by the decrease of respiratory control index and mitochondrial membrane potential. The resistance of the permeability transition pore to Ca2+ ions was increased by phenformin, but without measurable effect on membrane fluidity. Our data suggest that biguanides could be considered as agents with high efficacy but low specifity Workplace Institute of Physiology Contact Lucie Trajhanová, lucie.trajhanova@fgu.cas.cz, Tel.: 241 062 400 Year of Publishing 2015
