AnnotationThis article summarizes the recent studies of mitochondrial DNA and lactase persistence of South Arabian populations made on the background of current archaeological research. Different scenarios for peopling of the Peninsula over the course of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene are discussed. We show that both genetic and archaeological evidence supports the existence of local Arabian refugia where ancestral populations resided during the Last Glacial Maximum.
