Hybrid sterility, a phenomenon associated with speciation, has been described in various eukaryotic species of animal and plant kingdoms. In this review genetic control of infertility of male hybrids between two subspecies of house mouse is analyzed. The role of the first hybrid sterility gene in mammals, Prdm9 is compared in intraspecific and interspecific hybrids and the meiotic anomalies in Prdm9 knockout and interspecific sterile hybrids are evaluated.
