The paper deals with the preparation and characterisation of whispering-galery-mode (WGM) spherical microresonators modified by thin xerogel layers. Microspheres with diameters around 330 micrometer have been prepared. The microspheres were modified by a thin silica xerogel layer using tetraethoxysilane-based sol. Resonance spectra of the microspheres were measured when WGMs were excited by a fiber taper. Q factors of the microspheres ranging from 10^4–10^6 have been determined from the resonance spectra.
