Carrot plants showing severe proliferation symptoms were observed in East Bohemia in 1996. Transmission electron microscopy revealed rickettsia-like organisms present in sieve tube elements of symptomatic plants. The diameter of the bodies ranged from about 0.2-0.3 micrometer, and the lenght of the elongated forms reached 2.2 micrometer. No other organisms were detected.
