Kapitola v kolektivní monografii o starých ženách ve středověku se zaměřuje na roli Stařeny či Babizny (Vieille) v Románu o Růži Guillauma de Lorris a Jeana de Meun. V tomto středověkém bestselleru se protíná mnoho tradic. Zde sledujeme tradici etymologickou, jejíž stopy nacházíme před Románem o Růži u Isidora ze Sevilly či v Kosmově kronice. Podle této tradice je žena (mulier) od přirozenosti měkká (molis) a proto se do ní snadno vtiskává utrpení i zkušenosti, a to vše jí může následně velmi dobře posloužit, jak se ukazuje právě v Románu. Studie tak stojí v opozici vůči standardnímu čtení tohoto díla, v němž Stařeně přísluší výhradně záporná role.

A chapter in a collective monograph devoted to old women in the Middle Ages focuses on the role of the Old Woman (Vieille) in the Romance of the Rose (Roman de la Rose) of Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. In this medieval European bestseller, many traditions intersect. Here we follow an etymological tradition whose traces (apart of the Romance) can be found in Isidore of Seville or in the Chronicle of Cosmas. According to this tradition, the woman (mulier) is by nature soft (molis) and therefore can be easily imprinted with suffering and experience. Afterwards, this experience can serve the old woman very well. The study thus stands in opposition to the standard reading of the Romance, in which the Old Woman is assigned an exclusively negative role.
