A consolidation treatment restores original properties of degraded historical building materials.
The consolidation based on the surface impregnation of an object (historical monument)
is quite popular in restoration nowadays. The treatment increases material density by the absorption
of consolidating solution that contains particles of the building material. A distribution
of the new deposited material inside the object significantly affects the resulting object
properties; therefore a method to analyze such a treatment is needed. Here, a method based
on the differential X-ray radiography is introduced for this purpose. The method is employed
in the case of Mastricht limestone consolidated by CaLoSil® solution that contains particles
of calcium hydroxide dissolved in ethanol. The results showed that the distribution of the new
material is strongly heterogeneous inside the specimen. Based on this fact, a modification
procedure that affects the resulting distribution in a better way is proposed.
