We identified a relatively wide diploid–autotetraploid secondary contact zone for Cardamine amara located north of the Eastern Alps. Mixed ploidy populations, recorded for the first time in this species, were fairly abundant along the diploid–tetraploid borderline, and occasionally triploids were also detected there. The tetraploids were genetically differentiated from both the diploids and the modeled, in silico autotetraploid genotypes inferred from the present-day diploids from the studied populations. These patterns of genetic variation are in accordance with the assumed tetraploid origin and spread linked to past glaciations and with independent evolution in allopatry.
