Kniha Kouzelník s hračkami, hledač nových krás. Básnické dílo Josefa Bartušky v kontextu tvorby skupiny Linie a meziválečné avantgardy se zaměřuje na jednu z kapitol z dějin české avantgardy, která navzdory své zajímavosti zůstávala v literárněhistorickém výzkumu více méně dosud opomíjena. Publikace do značné míry navazuje na monografii Jaroslava Anděla Avantgarda o mnoha médiích. Josef Bartuška a skupina Linie 1931–1939, vydanou v roce 2004 při příležitosti stejnojmenné výstavy. O Andělovu práci se studie sice v mnohém opírá, na rozdíl od ní se však primárně nezaměřuje na výtvarnou, nýbrž na literární činnost českobudějovické avantgardní skupiny, působící v třicátých letech 20. století. Hlavní pozornost je věnována dílu vůdčího člena Linie Josefa Bartušky, jež je pojednáno nejen na pozadí veškerých aktivit jihočeského sdružení, ale celé meziválečné avantgardy. Výklad propojuje metodu „citlivého čtení“ s literární a intermediální komparací, esejistickými úvahami i sondami inspirovanými sémiotickými studiemi a novějšími uměleckohistorickými přístupy, které nahlížejí umění jako historický a sociální jev, zkoumaný v kontextu dalších fenoménů spoluvytvářejících dobovou historicko-sociální realitu. V analýze textů je kombinováno tematické hledisko s chronologií a zařazeny jsou také obecněji pojaté exkurzy, které látku zasazují do širšího kontextu meziválečné avantgardy i témat zcela neavantgardních (krajina, příroda či regionálnost/lokálnost). Tento přístup umožňuje nahlédnout na dějiny české avantgardy z neobvyklé perspektivy a otevírá zkoumání problematiky avantgardního umění novým otázkám.

The book titled Kouzelník s hračkami, hledač nových krás. Básnické dílo Josefa Bartušky v kontextu tvorby skupiny Linie a meziválečné avantgardy (Magician with Toys in Search of New Kinds of Beauty. The poetry of Josef Bartuška in the context of the work of the Linie group and the interwar avant-garde) focuses on one of the chapters in the history of the Czech avant-garde that has so far been mostly neglected by literary history despite its interesting features. To a large extent, the present book builds on Jaroslav Anděl’s monograph Avantgarda o mnoha médiích. Josef Bartuška a skupina Linie 1931–1939 (The Avant-garde of Many Media. Josef Bartuška and the Linie group 1931–1939), published in 2004 in connection with an exhibition bearing the same title. While the present study relies on Anděl’s work in many respects, it differs by primarily focusing on the literary rather than visual art activities of the avant-garde group that formed in České Budějovice in the 1930s. In the centre of attention is the work of the leader of the Linie group, Josef Bartuška, presented in the context of all activities of the South Bohemian art collective and the interwar avant-garde in general. The applied methodology combines “sensitive reading” with literary and inter-media comparisons, essays and research probes inspired by semiotics as well as modern approaches in art history that perceive art as a historical and social phenomenon, analysed in the context of other phenomena that together form the reality of the given period. The analysis of texts combines a thematic with a chronological approach; there are also more general sections that serve to illuminate the broader context of the interwar avant-garde as well as other topics wholly unrelated to it (landscape, nature or a regional/local character). This approach allows viewing the history of the Czech avant-garde from an unusual perspective and poses new questions for the research of avant-garde art.
