AnnotationHearing thresholds, the strength of the acoustic startle responses and the efficiency of the prepulse inhibition were assessed in young, middle-aged, and aged Long Evans and Fischer 344 rats. Fischer 344 rats showed larger age-related hearing threshold shifts and lower amplitudes of startle responses at an earlier age than in Long Evans rats. A reduction of the prepulse inhibition was observed in aged rats of both strains. The results indicate that the acoustic startle response may serve as an indicator of central presbycusis.
