Tyto pece byly obvykle situovány na okrajích sídlišť, poblíž vodních zdrojů a vytvářely skupiny, v některých případech zahrnující až stovky objektů.
Recessed features, in this article referred to as “square-shaped ovens”, can be found in Roman period settlement areas in the Barbaricum. Most of them are known from the territory of the Przeworsk culture, they often occur in the Danube area occupied by the Germans and in other regions with Germanic occupation. The ovens are usually situated at the periphery of settlements, next to watercourses, and are arranged into groups, which sometimes encompass even some hundreds of such features. In square-shaped ovens fire was made and heat was accumulated using hot stones. From among numerous explanations of their former purpose this article prefers the hypothesis, after which the ovens would have been involved in leather processing or textile work.
