Solanaceae family represents an interesting group to study telomere structure and function in an evolutionary context. Solanaceae possess typical plant telomeres (TTTAGGG)n maintained by telomerase (e.g. Solanum, Nicotiana genera). In addition to these, ornamental shrubs Cestrum and closely related genera Sessea and Vestia are still the only examples of dicots which lack Arabidopsis-type telomeres.

Rostlinná čeleď Solanaceae je zajímavá pro studium struktury a funkce telomer. Její zástupci mají typické rostlinné telomery (TTTAGGG)n udržované telomerázou (např. rody Solanum, Nicotiana) a zároveň jiní její zástupci, okrasné keře rodu Cestrum a blízce příbuzné rody Sessea a Vestia jsou jedinými známými příklady dvouděložných rostlin postrádající telomery typu Arabidopsis.
