Trichodesmium survives short-term Fe limitation by selectively down-regulating nitrogen fixation while maintaining but re-arranging the photosynthetic apparatus. Fe limitation caused a fast down-regulation of nitrogenase activity and protein levels. By contrast, the abundance of Fe-requiring photosystem I (PSI) components remained constant. Nedostatek železa způsobuje rychlý pokles množství enzymů nitrogenázy a jejich aktivity. Nemění se množství enzymů Fotosystému I a fykobilisomů. Mění se i charakteristický denní rytmus aktivity Fotosystému II a nitrogenázy. Trichodesmium při nedostatku železa omezuje aktivitu fixace dusíku, ale fotosyntetická aktivita zůstává zachována
