Since classical laboratory mice are mostly of .I.Mus. m. domesticus ./I.origin they display plethora of differences in many complex phenotypes such as blood levels of intermediate metabolites, sensitivity to type-1 diabetes or behaviour when compared with PWK/Ph and PWD/Ph strains. These complex traits can be genetically dissected by QTL analysis using microsatellite markers of known genetic location. Thus the PWD/Ph and PWK/Ph strains are a valuable resource in functional genomics projects.
