This special issue focuses on managerial knowledge in places that would be considered peripheral to the centres of capitalist management. The case studies in this issue examine management discourses and practices beyond the capitalist North in their own right. This special issue does not trace this management knowledge produced in the peripheries back to the Western centre. Rather, by demonstrating the heterogeneity of managerial knowledge across the globe, the contributions to this special issue substantially challenge the view that the supremacy of Western standards of managerial and economic knowledge inevitably led to the extension of the post-1989 global capitalist order to both the socialist East and the Global South. They highlight the crucial role of local elites, diverse practices of control and situated discourses about efficiency, productivity and the optimal allocation of resources in different parts of the world.
