Příspěvek vychází z teze, že soudobé české dějepisectví o 19. století zůstává venkovu hodně dlužno. Tento deficit vyvstává jak ze srovnání s poměrně bohatou tradicí českých agrárních dějin, tak i s pozorností, již venkovu v současnosti věnují historici raného novověku. Autor se zamýšlí nad příčinami tohoto stavu a pokouší se identifikovat, co nejvíce postrádáme v bádáních o dějinách venkova v letech 1850–1914, jako zejména syntézu, interdisciplinaritu, komparaci s poměry v sousedních zemích a sledování jevů v řádu longue durée.

The paper is based on the thesis that contemporary Czech history of the 19th century owes much to the rural history. This deficit arises both from a comparison with the relatively rich tradition of Czech agrarian history and with the attention currently paid to the rural world by historians of the early modern period. The author reflects on the reasons for this state of affairs and tries to identify what is most lacking in research on rural history between 1850 and 1914, such as synthesis, interdisciplinarity, comparison with the situation in neighbouring countries, and tracing phenomena in the order of the longue durée.
