Pivoňky (Paeonia) jsou známým rodem rostlin. Vyskytují se v Asii, Africe a Severní Americe i v Evropě. V Evropě existuje 12 druhů a nejméně dvakrát tolik poddruhů bylinných pivoněk. Taxonomické pojetí některé skupiny není dosud ustálené. Čtyři taxony jsou ve volné přírodě kriticky ohrožené a chráněné. Druh P. officinalis je jako léčivá rostlina znám již od starověku.
Peonies (Paeonia) are well-known genus of plants. Thy occur in Asia, Africa and North America as well as in Europe. There are 12 species and least twice many subspecies of herbaceous peonies. The taxonomic conception of some group is not yet stable. Four taxa are criticaly endangered and protected in the wild. The species P. officinalis has been known as a medicinal plant since ancient time.
