This chapter introduces taxonomic, functional, and ecological diversity of tropical wetland fishes. It describes fish fauna in various wetland habitats, depending on their size, connectivity, and seasonality, and illustrates them using examples from wetlands in Africa, Neotropics, Asia, and New Guinea. Reproductive strategies, including migratory patterns and seasonal aspects of habitat use, are reviewed. Life history strategies (periodic, equilibrium, opportunistic) are outlined. Trophic ecology of tropical fishes is examined, with reference to special feeding habits of wetland fishes, such as frugivory. Resource partitioning in wetland fish communities is summarized. Finally, specific adaptations to wetland habitat, such as hypoxia and temporary desiccation are discussed.
