Annotation	This special, thematic volume of the journal Contradictions focuses on the “critical reappraisal of civil society” as the concept has been mobilized in successive political projects in the modern history of East-Central Europe. Contributors consider the concept’s emancipatory potential as well as its use to maks new forms of domination, and they consider the question of which parts of society are granted access to “civil” society, and which parts left out.
