AnnotationDuring hypoxia aerobic eukaryotes protect themselves against deleterious ATP depletion caused by the reversal of mitochondrial (mt) ATP synthase activity to ATP hydrolysis, which is inevitable consequence of the mt membrane potential (m) collapse in the lack of oxygen. The protection involves IF1, a protein inhibiting ATP hydrolysis by reversible binding to F1-ATPase, the catalytic sector of the enzyme.
