For the medieval Islamic world, as for any other socio-political system, the issue of legitimacy was of crucial importance. For Muslims, the ruler usually represented the symbol of legitimate power, guaranteed the upholding of the Islamic law and the historical continuity of Muslim communities and their connection to the Prophet Muhammad
