Sulphur is known to play an important role not only as a macronutrient, but also associated with plant tolerance against various abiotic stresses. Better understanding of how to improve S utilization for enhancement of crop quantity and quality is critical for advancement in this field. This chapter presents the compendium of recent findings concerning the role of sulphur in plant stress alleviation. The chapter describes S assimilation from sulphate, together with synthesis of various sulphur-containing organic compounds, which are known to mitigate abiotic stresses. Then it deals with the role of sulphur, sulphur-containing compounds and corresponding metabolism during mitigation of particular stresses, such as heavy metals, salinity and drought, together with influence of exogenous S application during these stresses. The role of hydrogen sulphide and related reactive sulphur species is mentioned together with a passing reference to future prospects of exploration in this field.
