Label-free optical biosensors represent a unique technology that enables the direct observation of molecular interaction in real-time and offers benefits of rapid, sensitive and label-free detection of chemical and biological species. This paper reviews the state of the art in the field of label-free optical biosensors and their applications in numerous important areas including proteomics, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, food safety and security.
