A decrease in oxidative phosphorylation is characteristic of many cancer types and, in particular, of clear cell renal carcinoma deficient in vhl (von Hippel Lindau gene). This downregulation of oxidative phosphorylation was found to be associated with a key role of HIF and it was shown that this process is at least in part mediated by increased mitochondrial production of ROS, namely of the hydroxyl radical
Snížení oxidativní fosforylace je typické pro řadu nádorů, zejména pro ledvinný karcinom s defektem von Hippel Lindaue genu. Studie ukázala, že ve snížení oxidativní fosforylace hraje klíčovou roli HIF a tento proces je, alespoň z části indukován zvýšenou tvorbou kyslíkových radikálů v mitochondriích jmenovitě hydroxylového radikálu
