In 1950's to 70's, electrochemical measurements of adsorption from solutions on the interface of renewable mercury drop electrode yielded fundamental results on the mechpanism of adsorption process. One such important finding was the notion of a condensation process, which leads to the compacting of the adsorbed layer.
