AnnotationThe behaviour of young-of-the-year perch as a dominating species of the pelagic fry assemblage of the Slapy Reservoir (Czech Republic) was studied during late May and mid June 2002 using acoustic and complementing net catches. During the day the perch fry was present simultaneously in littoral, epipelagic and bathypelagic habitats. Bathypelagic perch fry forming a scattering layer performed extensive diel vertical migrations between the epilimnion and hypolimnion. At the dusk migrating bathypelagic perch fry mixed in epilimnion with non-migrating epipelagic perch fry and spent the night close to the thermocline. In June, shoaling behaviour of a certain part of bathypelagic perch fry was also observed. Shoaling perch fry remained shallower in the water column than non-shoaling bathypelagic perch fry. Both depth of scattering layer and depth of shoals were strongly controlled by the light intensity.
