This article discusses the creation and transformation of six settlements in the Ore Mountains and the local mining of ore from the end of the 16th century to the 18th century. These towns were founded according to planned urban concepts and granted a series of privileges, but they were still plagued by many problems, including low outputs from mines, demographic problems, as well as socioeconomic and environmental factors. Although the towns were never abandoned, the localities struggled to maintain their urban character and the privileges tied to mining. Steps were taken to improve mining to develop these localities and maintain their status as mining towns (albeit sometimes small), including inviting foreign experts. Reports from visits are used here as the main source testifying to the conditions in the towns under study.
