The author outlines a genealogy of contemporary 'culture wars' debates on national identity from within the dissident and (post)dissident debates of Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The chapter reconstructs the main disputes about various concepts of nation, civil society and the democratic imaginary as a part of the dissident legacy. It shows that the national-conservative turn was one among the possible actualizations of discourses on nation and democracy present in the anti-communist oppostition before 1989.
