The article represents an entry describing most recent developments in the seismic ray theory. Besides the basic principles of the ray theory, several recently introduced and applied concepts are described. Attention is paid to the coupling ray theory for S waves propagating in anisotropic media. Some space is devoted to the combination of perturbation methods with the ray method. One very useful concept developed on this basis is the weak-anisotropy approximation, which found recently many applications in exploration seismics, and which can also be used in the S-wave coupling problem. Another application of the perturbation method is the weak-attenuation approximation. The entry contains references to many other innovative approaches.
