The paper describes the analysis of the destructive oscillation of a skewed steel rod with the length 21 m. The steel rod is a part of roof supporting bundle (rectangular array) of cylindrical hangers at the airport building, it is therefore exposed to frequent moderate and sometimes to strong winds with low turbulence. The vibration is analyzed from the aeroelastic perspective, i.e. the cause of the oscillation is analyzed as wake-induced vibration because the collapse was observed at the bottom downwind hanger in that array configuration. The normalized distance of hangers in horizontal and vertical directions is equal to 3.2 D with D being a diameter of the hanger cross section and 3.8 D, respectively. The analysis was carried out using two-dimensional numerical model, i.e. we considered the full wind pressure correlation over the cylinder’s surface for the preliminary analysis. The preliminary numerical results show that the strong oscillation and the collapse observed in the reality was caused by the wake-induced vortices shed at the windward rod(s) and attacking the leeward one. The numerical results are going to be validated in the wind tunnel tests on the sectional model of the hangers also configured in the identical four-cylinder array as on site.
