Článek shrnuje současné poznatky o časovém cirkadiánním systému savců a člověka. Věnuje pozornost nejen základním faktům o cirkadiánních rytmech, centrálních hodinách v mozku, které je koordinují, molekulové podstatě cirkadiánní rytmicity, hierarchii časového systému a jeho synchronizaci s vnějším prostředím, ale také spojitosti mezi cirkadiánním systémem a tělesnými funkcemi a zejména poruchám tohoto systému a jejich důsledkům.

The article summarizes current knowledge on the mammalian and human time-keeping system. It concentrates not only on basal data about circadian rhythms, the central clock in the brain, the molecular mechanism of the circadian rhythmicity, hierarchy of the time-keeping system and its synchronization with the outside environment, but also on relation between the circadian system and bodily functions, especially on disorders of the system and its consequences.
