A French pediatrician Tissier postulated in 1900 that fetuses develops in sterile conditions of the uterus. An adjective ´gnotobiotic´ is commonly used for microbiologically defined hosts including of sterile (germ-free) ones. Our possibilities of detection of microbiota were enriched for highly sensitive detections of nucleic acids since the beginning of this century. Crucial question of gnotobiology is: Does prenatal development occur in the sterile conditions?
