Kniha rozdělená na dvě části se věnuje okruhu problémů, který je metaforicky označen jako minulost, kterou nikdo nezapsal. Ta zahrnuje jak etapy dávné prehistorie Starého světa, tak i mnoho neliterárních recentních společností mimo geografický okruh Západu. Oboje je postupně představeno tak, že v první části se pozornost upírá k obecným otázkám studia společností bez písma a v druhé potom konkrétní prehistorické etapě. Podstata problému je propojena s vnímáním několika hladin historického času, které Fernand Braudel označil jako úroveň událostí, rovinu sociální, ekonomické a kulturní historie a horizont dlouhého trvání. U archaických společností je podán kvalifikovaný přehled způsobů, jak je rozčlenit a vymezit vůči nám samotným. Z několika kulturních domén je potom pro další popis vybráno kritérium subsistenční a adaptační. Následně jsou podle tohoto principu představeny společnosti lovců-sběračů, pastevců, zahradních zemědělců a polnohospodářů.

The past that nobody has written down includes not just the phases of the ancient prehistory of the Old World but also addresses many of the more recent preliterate societies outside the geographic circle of the West. These topics are introduced sequentially and thereby, in the first part, attention is paid to general issues related to the study of preliterate societies whereas in the second part it is focussed on a specific prehistoric period. What is problematical is the linkage to the perception of multiple levels of historical time that Fernand Braudel describes as the level of events, acts of social, economic and cultural history and a horizon of longue durée. Archaic societies provide us with a qualified overview of ways in which we can both distinguish them from and define them in relation to ourselves. Subsistence and adaptation criteria are then selected from the several differentiated cultural domains that will additionally be described. Subsequently, in accordance with this same principle, the hunter-gatherer, pastoralist, horticulturalist and agriculturalist societies will also be introduced.
