Práce popisuje dvě verze Humovy teorie kausality. V první verzi, Hume je ovlivněn Malebranchem a tvrdí, že kausální vztah vyžaduje kontakt v prostoru. V druhé verzi, Hume je už ovlivněn Newtonem a píše jakoby kausální vztah mohl existovat bez kontaktu mezi příčinou a účinkem. Tento rozdíl spolu s dalšími znamená, že Humeova zralá teorie kausality nejen odmítá mechanistické paradigma ale také postuluje skrytá nutné spojení v přírodě.

The chapter explores the development in Hume's conception of the nature of causation. It is argued that while in the early Treatise he is influenced by Malebranche's occasionalism and mechanism, in the later Enquiry his view of nature has become Newtonian. This leads to a shift in his thinking about causation, meaning that the causal nexus does not need to involve spatial contiguity, and that the real causal powers in nature transcend our human ability to conceive them.
