The article explores Merleau-Ponty’s theory of motivation. The reasons for an action are neither its causes, nor its premises. In phenomenological action theories, reasons are understood as motives. The article focuses on one specific question: What role does the language play in our giving reasons? It analyzes Merleau-Ponty’s account of linguistic expression in the light of this question. It claims that the phenomenology of motivation cannot do without the phenomenology of speech.
