The paper explores “legitimate” and, for feminist aims, beneficial uses of poststructural (or Foucauldian) discourse analysis of individual subjects’ utterances. A Foucauldian understanding of discourse generally implies an interest in the rules and regulations of discourse on an institutional and societal level, rather than on the level of particular individuals’ utterances. In this paper, however, I argue that the application of poststructural discourse analysis to the study of individual subjects’ utterances is productive, particularly when extended with deconstructive reading. Combining PDA with deconstruction provides us both with a technique of textual analysis, and with a practise of affective and bodily transformation of a reader’s and writer’s subjectivity. To support these claims, I discuss my research on gender identity among young, heterosexual Czech women and men.
