Polysiloxane xerogel layers doped with methyl and phenyl groups were prepared on substrates of silica fibers by the alkoxide sol-gel method and their sensitivity was tested by bringing the layers into contact with mixtures of gaseous toluene. The fibers were excited by an inclined collimated baem and output power was measured. The experiments have shown that layers prepared from methyltriethoxysilane-based sol exhibit a better sensitivity to toluene than laeyrs based on tetraethoxysilane.
