While silica glasses are suitable for most optical applications, namely in optics and telecommunications, there is growing interest in new family of special glasses involving fluoride, chalcogenide and heavy metal oxide glasses which extend the research and application due to their transmission in middle and far infrared region of spectra, lower values of phonon energies and higher values of refraction indexes opposite to SiO₂. These glasses can be used for the drawing as passive and active optical fibres.
