Oba tyto dialogy jsou zároveň míněny jako římská obdoba Platónových dialogů Ústava a Zákony. Ze spisu O zákonech, který Cicero nejspíše nikdy nedokončil, se dochovaly necelé tři knihy a několik zlomků. První kniha tematizuje především otázku přirozeného práva, ve druhé knize se Cicero zabývá náboženskými zákony, ve třetí knize nastiňuje rozdělení a kompetence politických úřadů. Jako bytostný Říman Cicero nenavrhuje zákony pro ideální obec mimo reálný svět, ale pro dokonalejší podobu stávající římské republiky, jejímuž rozvratu se snaží zabránit. Description in English Cicero’s treatise On the Laws is closely connected to his earlier work On the Republic. Both these dialogues are intended as Roman counterparts to Plato’s dialogues The Republic and The Laws. Only three books and few fragments are preserved from Cicero’s presumably unfinished treatise On the Laws. The first book deals with the question of natural law, in the second book Cicero is concerned with religious laws, and in the third book he outlines the division and competences of political authorities. Being essentially a Roman, Cicero is not proposing laws for an ideal state beyond the real word but for an improved version of existing Roman republic, the decline of which he is trying to prevent.
