Description in English The issue of forgeries in fine arts resonates very strongly in society. At the same time, attention is focused mainly on Czech modern painting of the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, which is understandable. Forgery workshops cause significant economic damage here. The painting of miniature portraits, however, offers a completely different and in many ways specific story. Selling prices are lower, but more easily accessible to a much wider circle of interested parties and collectors. Miniatures are often offered by antique dealers and appear frequently in online auctions. But who knows the real story of painted miniatures and how to look at reproductions made with the help of photographic or photomechanical transfers? It was in the course of the 19th century, when portrait photography began to threaten the existence of the classic painted miniature, that a number of period-specific technologies were created. What is and is not a fake and why does it make sense to distinguish between fakes and decorative miniatures, which are often mass-produced items? The catalogue for the exhibition ”Copies and forgeries in portrait miniature” can be the first guide to help readers learn to distinguish between originals and imitations, as well as learn to ask what are the material, technological and artistic features that prove the quality and authenticity of small pieces of pocket format, which are still a valued collector's item today.
