The coalescence of bubbles and drops is a very important phenomenon in multiphase flow systems, which controls the bubble size distribution and the interfacial area available for heat and mass transfer in multiphase reactors. In the present communication, we will resume the results of our observations of the coalescence of bubbles, approaching at controlled velocity. Experiments were performed using high speed visualization of the life span of pairs of bubbles to investigate in detail how the coalescent efficiency, the bubble contact time and the transition concentration of a solute, depend on the liquid phase properties and on the velocity of approach between two bubbles. The study included the effect of viscosity, the presence of electrolytes and of surfactants.
