Energy consumed for heating and cooling of buildings constitutes about 30-40% of total energy used all over the world. Proper choice of building materials and modifications of existing ones, such as very widespread cement-based composites,
can improve thermal performance of buildings' envelopes and thus contribute to higher rate of sustainability. In this paper the carbon-based aggregate (CA) was used as a replacing material to traditional natural silica aggregate (NA) in concrete mixes with maintained rheology. Alternative aggregate was dosed in the range of 0-100 vol.% and its influence on structural properties, mechanical resistance and thermal performance, measured on 28-days water cured samples, was evaluated. Experimental investigation revealed considerable lightening accompanied with importantly reduced heat transport of samples without natural aggregate content. Moreover, it was found that half dose of alternative aggregate not only improve thermal performance of produced concretes, but also help to keep strength properties in acceptable level. Thus, designed concretes can be applicable in both construction and supplementary applications with regard to high performance requirements.
