Studie se pokouší o komplexní čtení postavy Jana Fausta v prvních tištěných knížkách o jeho osudech, zejm. v české verzi Martina Carchesia a v jejím německém předobrazu vydaném Johannem Spiessem. Vedle klasicky uváděné „novověké“ touhy po vědění u něj konstatujeme rovněž (a hlavně) nedostatek naděje a přílišné spoléhání na vlastní slovo, tedy vlastnosti, jež v raně novověké střední Evropě prošlé konfesionalizací postupně získávají na ožehavosti.

The study strives to accomplish a complex reading of the character Johann Faust in the first printed versions of his story, – the original German version published by Johann Spiess and the Czech translation made by Martin Carchesius. In addition to the „modern“ thirst for knowledge that is usually presented as the key to this literary character, we emphasize also Faust's overdependency on validity of his own word and palpable lack of hope. Both of these are becoming more and more dangerous in gradually confessionalized Center-European space before the Thirty Years War.
