With the trope of Black Athena, inspired by Martin Bernal’s work, Nagel troubles the colonizing gaze of white heteropatriarchal imagination. Furthermore, she draws on Viviane Saleh-Hanna’s theory of Black Feminist Hauntology in order to discuss the political, psycho-historical implications of different performance iterations in the African Diaspora, specifically the United States and Brazil.
