Ozonation of an extract of a Microcystis water bloom sample was shown to be a very effective method in the complete removal of MCs, as well as the substantial elimination of the overall cytotoxicity and tumour promotional potency. On the contrary, chlorination experiments, despite high doses and long exposures, were much less effective, and potentially led to the formation of by-products, which could add to the observed toxic effects.
